HANDLOOMS, HANDICRAFTS, TEXTILES AND KHADI

The Handloom Sector is the second largest employer in India, providing employment to about 65 lakh person. The handloom sector in Tamilnadu is known for its tradition of excellent craftsmanship. These skills are being passed on from generation to generation. Since ancient times as a rich heritage woven into fabric. The handlooms weaving is one of the largest economic activities in Tamilnadu providing employment to 1.89 lakh weavers households and about 3.19 lakh weavers. Tamilnadu has the price for its unique handloom woven products like Silk Sarees, Cotton Sarees, Furnishing materials, dhoties, lungies and Towels. In Vellore alone there are about 11000 looms which 10000 looms are covered under the Cooperative fold and the coverage works out to 90%.

Textiles is one of the India’s oldest industries and has a formidable presence in the national economy. The Government of Tamilnadu have been taking various steps and vibrant industry, which would not only contribute significantly to production, employment, economic growth of textile industry but also uplift the quality of life of the weavers and enhance their prosperity. In order to achieve the goal of making Tamilnadu. The Numero Uno state in the country, the Department of Handlooms and Textiles is working towards creation of a conducive environment by implementing numerous welfare schemes for the handloom weavers and for the growth and development of all the sub-sector and stakeholders of the Textile Industry.

FIELD OF ACTIVITIES

The Government of Tamilnadu is extending of various financial assistances to the Weavers Co-operative Societies in accordance with the Textile Policy adopted by the Central Government. In order to have close supervision over the Weavers Co-operative Societies in the Vellore District, Circle Assistant Director’s Office was new formed on 01.03.1986 vide G.O.No.70, Handlooms and Textiles Department, Dated: 09.08.1985 and G.O.No.158, Handloom and Textiles, Dated: 27.11.1985. As per G.O.Ms.No.164, Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi(E2) Department, Dated : 15.12.2010, Vellore Circle was bifurcated and Thiruvannamalai Circle Assistant Director’s Office new formed on 1.2.2011.

The following are the major functions of the Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Vellore.

  • Organization of new Co-operative Societies, effective supervision over the existing Societies, administration of the Societies in order to give regular employment to weaver members.
  • Effective arrangements for sale of the goods produced through Co-optex, waiving over the production of finished goods and steps taken to clear the goods by giving rebate subsidy.
  • Drawing and disbursing the rebate amount sanctioned by the Government.
